Prestigious roots

Sherpa Technology Group was founded by pioneers in the field of technology and intellectual property strategy. Founding Partner Kevin Rivette formerly ran IP strategy at IBM, wrote an internationally acclaimed strategy book (Rembrandts in the Attic), and founded a software company that was the first to digitize the US patent database. Rivette joined the leaders of the IP strategy practice at The Boston Consulting Group (“BCG”), a globally renowned management consulting firm. The BCG team, which included Sherpa Technology Group co-founder Ralph Eckardt, built a highly-successful IP strategy consulting practice that partnered with some of the world’s largest technology-focused companies.

Breaking the mold

This same team formed Sherpa Technology Group in 2008 so that it could have the flexibility to work with both large and small companies and avoid conflicts of interest that inevitably arise at larger consulting firms. But perhaps more importantly, departing from BCG allowed the team to assist clients with technology-focused transaction execution rather than just strategy.

Demonstrated success

The Sherpa Technology Group team has now advised on technology and IP transactions cumulatively valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, and we have created integrated business/technology/IP strategies that have had a lasting impact on our clients’ businesses. In addition to working with industry-leading companies, Sherpa Technology Group’s clients have also included smaller innovative companies that invented groundbreaking technology and hold seminal IP.

Sherpa Technology Group’s team members have continued to build their reputations as thought leaders in the space. Sherpa Technology Group co-founder Ralph Eckardt co-authored The Invisible Edge, which was named the best strategy book of 2009 by “strategy+business” magazine. Furthermore, Sherpa Technology Group’s senior team members frequently provide insights to media outlets such as Bloomberg and are often invited to speak on matters related to IP markets and strategy.
